Queer Designers of Canada

BRANDING | DESIGN | CREATIVE DIRECTION

Design and fashion expert, host of CityLine, and editor of news and pop culture magazine, Complex, Christian Dare identified a gap in digital representation and searchability for 2SLGBTQ+ designers in Canada.

The first of its kind in the country, the forthcoming directory of queer design talent aims to address the challenge of discovering queer-identified designers.

Like any marginalized histories, contributions risk being lost if the community does not amplify its own voices. The project required an instantly-recognizable brand identity, quickly.

In just under 4 weeks, we developed an iconic, distinctive and wearable representation of the diversity of 2SLGBTQ+ talent across the country.

Imbued with inclusive values that intentionally subvert the traditional Pride flag, the design nods to modernist colour palettes, typography, and iconography that reminds viewers of the remarkable contributions and rich histories in the queer design community.

The subtly retro aesthetic assures that though the mainstream hasn’t always recognized it, queer designers have and will always be here.
